Ask the Coach

We encourage you to ask your training and racing questions here. All questions will be moderated for appropriateness and relevance, and answers will be posted here. Anonymous questions will not be posted. E-mail the coach.

Q. What foods are best for a pre-workout energy boost?

A. Complex carbohydrates are low in fat and fast-burning which means that they give your body an energy boost but don't tend to stick around as extra pounds! Unlike sweets, which give you a "sugar rush" (lots of energy) followed by a "sugar crash" (fatique, headache), complex carbohydrates provide consistent levels of energy to help you through your workout. What kinds of foods are rich in complex carbohydrates? Whole grain cereals and breads, rice, beans, nuts and some types of fruits and vegetables are your best bets.
